Fliss Dodd started out as a sculptor and ceramics artist who was beginning to gain some small recognition in Australia. However, following the birth of her first child, Dodd became aware of a lack of good quality children’s toys made from fabric. And so, she decided to create Udder, a children’s retailer with a focus on handmade children’s toys. Over the years, the company has branched out into children’s accessories and even clothes, but they continue to keep the handmade, homely tradition which started out the company.
All of the company’s products are created by a small boutique in Bali, using traditional Indonesian creative techniques – such as silk screens, manual brushing and Batik. The end result is high quality and completely unique clothes and toys which are sure to make your kids feel super special. All the clothes are ethically made and in the future the company hopes to start sponsoring an Indonesian non-profit organisation which focusses on helping the environment – all as part of their plan to give back to the community. Overall, this is a children’s clothing and toy boutique with heart – and it really shows!
There is a rather adorable Handmade Friends collection where you’ll find the cutest soft playthings all with a toy theme. Each comes with a different design and its own unique look – they all even have their own names! Our personal favourites were the Bandit Penguins, but check it out for yourself to see what you or your child would love. Under accessories you will find fashionable neck-scarves sure to add a stylish finishing touch to your child’s outfit – as well as some charming superhero style capes, complete with a mask!
The Udder brand does also offer clothes, though you’d be mistaken for thinking so as it’s not the main offering here, unlike with most children’s retailers. The kinds of clothes which you can buy include jackets, jumpers scarves and dresses, all designed to combine a sense of fun with fashion.
